Starting in the round pen, Hank begins groundwork for the horse by using only natural horsemanship methods. His goal with the horse in the beginning is trust, not trauma. He encourages instruction not only to the horse, but also to the rider. This leads to positive and rewarding results from both.
Hank believes it comes down to erasing bad habits and replacing them with clear and open channels of communication between horse and rider. Timing is everything. With both physical and emotional rewards, the horse learns a basis of knowledge and understanding, which marks the beginning of an enjoyable and trusting relationship between trainer, horse, and rider.
